The Winnipeg Folk Festival is (finally) here.
Between July 6 and 9, about 100 musical acts and thousands of festive folk will descend upon Birds Hill Provincial Park—You need to be ready for anything. Here are 10 Essential Items to Make your Folk Fest a Success:
1. Phone Charger
There are phone charging stations around the festival site and the campground, but lines can be a drag and with a portable charger you’ll never have to step away from the action.
2. Sunglasses
I’m just going to leave Winnipeg’s forecast here:
3. Rain gear
Yes, the forecast is looking sunny, but Winnipeg is unpredictable. Most Winnipeg apartments have a poncho lying around somewhere…
4. Water Bottle
There are plenty of spots around the festival to refill a water bottle with clean water, so be sure to bring one.
Tip: Go hands free—buy a carabiner clip and attach the bottle to your belt loop.
5. Drink Container
Stainless steel wine glass, thermos, or hipster steel pint glass is essential. Remember: Open liquor is only allowed in designated areas.
6. Functional Footwear
High heels, bare feet and brand new shoes are a bad idea. Anything else is a good idea.
7. Frisbee (and other fun things)
In the mad dash to pack the essentials, don’t forget fun! Frisbees, games, bubble blowers, and art supplies are a fun way to pass time between sets.
8. Snacks
Bring twice as many snacks as you think you’ll need. Folk Fest has amazing food trucks, but sometimes all you need is some baby carrots and hummus.
9. Chair
If you like being close to the stage, bring a low sitting chair. If you fail the soccer ball test, meaning a soccer ball can roll beneath your chair, you may have to sit at the back.
10. Tarps
Folk Fest has a serious tarp culture. It’s the official spot-claiming tool, but try not to take up more space than you need.
