With a warm sunny forecast, festivals, and some free entertainment, you hardly need an excuse to get out of your Winnipeg apartment this week. But just in case, here are 5 solid options.
1. The Canada Summer Games
When: July 28-August 13
Where: Multiple Venues
The country’s largest multi-sport event features 16 sports and over 250 events. Baseball, basketball, sailing, soccer and triathlons are a few of your options this week.
Plus, you can check out the Canada Games Festival which will have 11 days of free music from July 29-August 12. Consult The Forks’ stage schedule to catch Canadian favourites like Tanya Tagaq, Royal Canoe and Kardinal Offishall.
2.Stand-up Comedy Open Mic at The Park Theatre
When: July 31, 8:30 p.m.
Where: The Park Theatre
Come see your favourite local comedians and brave newcomers perform their best bits in 5 minute slots. Admission is free and doors open at 7 p.m. Enjoy some laughs and some drink specials ($13.50 pitchers). If you’re feeling funny, sign up yourself at 7:45 p.m.
3. African Folklorama Pavilion
When: August 6–12
Where: 290 Dubuc St.
Come celebrate different cultures from around the African continent. This popular pavilion features local entertainers showcasing traditional royal performances and folk dances with traditional instruments. Taste signature dishes like plantains, moi-moi and Sahara beer.
4. First Fridays in the Exchange

Where: The Exchange District
On the First Friday of every month, galleries, artist studios, and shops in The Exchange District stay open late to let people discover the treasures hidden inside those big old warehouses. This month’s First Friday’s includes a donation-based workout at The Cube with Pan Am Boxing Club (August 4 at 6 p.m.)
5. Little Rascals Movies on Memorial

Grab your childhood buds and reminisce over the timeless love story between Alfalfa and Darla. Come early for some pre-movie entertainment, including games, prizes, and more. More 90s’ movies are playing for free at Memorial Park every Tuesday in August.
