Summer came a little late to Winnipeg this year, but now it’s out in full force.

1. Block out the Sun
Keep the curtains or blinds in your apartment closed during the day and reduce up to 30% of unwanted heat. Solar blinds or darkening drapes are even better. Summer might be over by the time you get them from an online order, it’s a good thing you can buy solar blinds in store.
2. Stay Cool
Pick up some Dr. Bronner’s peppermint liquid soap— the menthol has a cooling effect on your skin that lasts just long enough for you to fall asleep. Making some cool treats, like coffee popsicles, or sticking your sheets in the freezer before you go to bed doesn’t hurt.
3. Keep the Breeze Going
Your ceiling fan will be a lot more efficient in the summer if you make sure it’s running counter clockwise. To check, stand beneath the fan and turn it on. If you immediately feel a breeze, then you’re good.
Tip: Also turn on kitchen exhaust fans and bathroom fans to pull hot air out of your apartment.
4. Draft Proof your Apartment
Check your door sweeps for any damage and inform your landlord if they needs replacing. You can also apply window film to seal up drafty windows. Simply stick it on your window like saran wrap and heat it with a hair dryer.
5. Avoid the Oven
