Winnipeg’s Pop-Up Movement is Here to Stay (For a Day)

July 6, 2017

Pop-ups are all rage in Winnipeg right now— and for good reason.

Temporary storefronts and markets are giving locals a glimpse into the city’s creative underbelly and budding entrepreneurs a platform to launch their brand. If you’re looking for apartments for rent in Winnipeg and love pop-ups, downtown might be your perfect match.

The Pop-up Phenomenon

Fun fact: the pop-up craze came out of the last financial crisis, when commercial vacancy rates were so high that landlords started renting out their spaces for a few days, or even a few of hours. Art galleries, groceries stores, apartment units and garages are just a few places where brands have been popping up more ever since.

But pop-ups aren’t just for startups who can’t afford permanent retail space—major corporations are turning to pop-ups as an experimental marketing tool.

Winnipeg’s Pop Up Scene

If you think Winnipeg was slow to adapt the pop-up culture, think again. Third+Bird celebrated their 9th anniversary this May. For the first time ever, this urban market took place in the basement of The Bay downtown, which otherwise sits empty.

About 100 local entrepreneurs sold clothing, art, home decor, jewelry, and more to over 7,000 people. It’s a dream space for  those revamping a space at home or looking for apartments for rent in Winnipeg  See for yourself here:

Every entrepreneur we talked to at Third + Bird said the same thing—Winnipeg is an awesome place to start a business. Living in the heart of the continent is a sweet spot for trade, retail space is affordable, and as a “big small town,” we love to support our own. Many of the vendors were psyched about the new location, too, as it’s convenient for the high number of young people living or looking for apartments for rent in Winnipeg that are close to the city centre.

Winnipeg’s pop-up movement moves way beyond retail, too. RAW: almond, an exclusive fine dining experience on a frozen river, is a great example of how pop-ups can reimagine a city’s landscape.

Latest on the pop-up scene is Alleyways Market in the Exchange. This curated pop-up shop/farmer’s market/design exhibition had its first event in June. Be sure to check out the next one— Friday, July 7, 4-10pm on Elgin Ave (between Lily and Bertha).
