Summer’s almost over, and you need a drink.
Elsa Taylor, head bartender at The Roost on Corydon, is an expert in creating unique and delicious craft cocktails, but today, she’s offering up her secret for crafting a well-known favourite. A Whiskey Sour is the perfect drink to enjoy in Winnipeg apartments after a long day at work.
Step 1: Chill Your Glass
Throw some ice in a nice glass and set it to the side. Allow it to cool down while you craft the cocktail.
Step 2: Add Some Rye
Find a separate glass to create the drink in and add around 2 oz of your favourite rye whiskey.
Step 3: Sweeten It Up
Next, you’ll have to sweeten up the drink. Simple syrup is easy to make yourself – all you need to do is bring a 1:1 ratio of syrup and water to a boil and you’re done. For this whiskey sour, you’re going to want to add 2/3 oz of simple syrup.
Step 4: Squeeze In a Lemon
Now take a full lemon and squeeze it in. Using a fresh lemon will bring out a more refreshing taste, but if you’re using store-bought, pre-packaged lemon juice, that’ll work too – just add 3/4 oz.
Step 5: Add An Egg White
This might sound a little weird, but it’s actually pretty standard. Adding an egg white brings out that silky, foamy texture in the cocktail, and when shaken well, it’s harmless. Crack your egg, separate the yolk, and let the white fall into the glass.
Step 6: Give It A Dry Shake
Shaking your cocktail without ice will emulsify the egg white and the other ingredients to create a well-mixed drink. Do this for about 30 seconds.
Step 7: Shake With Ice
Add some ice and shake – this time, around 10 seconds should do.
Step 8: Strain It, Fine
Fine strain the drink into your glass just to get rid of any egg shell pieces or chunks that may have fallen in.
Step 9: Pour Into Chilled Glass and Add Ice
Grab that glass you set aside early and pour your beverage in. Add a bit of ice to top in off.
Step 10: Toss On A Couple Dashes of Angostura Bitters
A couple dashes of angostura bitters to add a little flavour to the beverage. Maybe, if you’re feeling a little cheeky, use a stir stick to draw a little heart out of them.
BONUS STEP: Enjoy!
