You might think that Winnipeg’s chilly climate makes it impossible, but it’s easy to grow fresh herbs right from apartments in Winnipeg. Still, a little help never hurts: Check out these tips for growing 4 herbs indoors, courtesy of Soil & Soul.
Growing Food from Apartments in Winnipeg:
Dill
Dill is super easy to grow. It doesn’t need a lot of light, so you can plant it indoors. In about 15-20 days it should be ready to sprinkle on pizzas, salads and more.
Tip: Water your dill plant once a week and pluck off the leaves as soon as the plant bows over.

Lemon thyme
Lemon thyme is a versatile herb that you can grow indoors and use in tons of tasty recipes. Keep it in your kitchen, so that it’s easy to grab for a garnish or rub for a roast chicken.
Tip: Don’t over water your thyme, once a week is just fine.
Cilantro
Cilantro is another low maintenance plant for indoor growing, although it needs more water and sun than the others. Once the top of the plant starts to seed, it’s at the end of its life, so plant the new seeds for a fresh harvest.
Tip: If the leaves get brown, be sure to pluck them off and they will regrow in a couple days.

Basil
Basil gives off a fragrant scent, so it’s not a bad idea to place your pot of basil somewhere where you can enjoy it. once you pot your basil, you should see results in about 3-4 weeks. Be sure to trim the leaves often!
Tip: Basil likes sunny—not hot—conditions. Keep your basil by a window sill that gets early morning light, but that is shaded during the hottest part of the day.
