Making the best of a situation is what Winnipeggers do best.
Limited space and noise levels are two big challenges for hosting parties, but a friendly Manitoban party host always keeps the comfort of their guests and neighbours top of mind. If someone is braving -40 degree weather to come to your party, it better be good. Here are five tips for partying in a rental property:
1. Rearrange your space
Enlist a second pair of hands to help you move your TV, bike and any clutter into your bedroom. It’s ok if you create a blockade, you likely don’t want people hanging out in there, anyways.
Tip: Save space by using your shower rod as a coat rack and fill your kitchen sink with ice to use it as a cooler.
2. Spread the love (the food, I mean)
Centrepieces are cute, but the snack table will always be the centre of attention, at least at the start. Improve the flow of your space by placing snacks on tables and shelves throughout your apartment.
Tip: Use disposable flatware and cutlery to keep the sink free of clutter.
3. Keep it cool
The added bodies in a small space will cause the room to heat up. Keep your guests comfortable by turning down your thermostat a tad about an hour before the party starts.
4. Keep it warm
Harsh overhead lights will harsh the vibe. Candles, lamps, string lights really set the mood. Plus, you can place unique lighting in different areas of your apartment to create a different vibe in each zone, even if it’s a bachelor apartment.
5. Soundproof your party
Loud music is probably the number one mistake that leads to parties being shut down. Check your apartment’s lease agreement for a “quiet hours clause” to see if you’ve already agreed to send everyone packing early. Also inform (or invite!) your neighbours to the party. Even if they don’t go come, knowing you reached out might make them more understanding of the noise.
Tip: A 1% opening in your door will allow up to 50% of sound to pass through. Shop around for some acoustic door seals. https://acousticalsolutions.com/acoustic-door-seals/
